Midstay from August 3 to 7

Hello to all!

I'm not just in a position to do a literary tour de force to lie but I do my best.

Last week (Monday to Friday) was held in Cape Town the "Midstay Seminar" took place.
All the volunteers together with AFS in March to South Africa have been met in a friendly backpackers at the foot of Table Mountain and about their experiences and problems (Chen) are discussed. Technical problem I had not so much to report, because I can complain about in any way my project and as I have experienced until now there Alta du Toit, no complaints (rather the opposite). However, it was

A topic with me and Kate (I had the impression at least) haengenblieb longer is the "Personal Development". We were in the car yesterday with Riekie talk about it and the feeling that we are moving in the right (ie positive) direction as far as this.

Lili is indeed now gone, unfortunately, (Saturday morning). I am very sad about because even though we know now "only" 5 months, we have shared so much together. And because I feel have this in my letter not made clear enough to Lili, THANK YOU for your incredible love letter! I've beat me so happy about it!!

since my last entry is quite a while back and did not turn out particularly explicit I will now tell a little more intense.

It's almost a half year ago that I moved into the Alta du Toit Centre and I feel I still very much (if not better). However, in the near future, some things ändern.Zum one is next week, Lili's last. She will then fly to make a trip to Namibia via Johannesburg and then back to Germany.

Unfortunately I will not be here next week, but in Cape Town because there all the volunteers have come together to take SA to date on the progress of their work and discuss problems encountered evt (and some fun have J). As such, I am looking forward to it containing only real shame that I now the last time with Lili can not work together. It's odd that she goes now that we have shared so much together.

 I assist in the hostel named “Tosnini” which is for lower functioning adults with intellectual disability. I found my place and my duties in the therapeutic activity program. 

 General duties
-      Supervision (if Caregivers have a meeting)
-       Lending a hand at breakfast à buttering breads and so on

 Duties during the therapeutic activity programme
-      assisting clients who needs help on a 1:1 basis
-      make sure that everybody has something to do
-     finnishing the products (gift bags)
-      Creating new activities
-      Helping to make the room more comfortable
-       Knitting with the clients (dolls)
-      Giving a report about the development of a client

  People at the project:

o        Clients:

§          Daycare

§          Residents

·         Lower functioning: Tosnini

·         Higher functioning: Kleinbegin

o        Management:

§          Annetjie, in charge of the volunteers

§          Administrative staff

  -          money
-          especially in the therapeutic program à inconsequent behaviour to the clients

 

  List with suggestions for future volunteers:

-          What to bring:

o        Warm water bottler for winter time

o        Extra work – clothes, for example a tracksuit, comfortable clothes that can get dirty

o        Personal entertainment stuff like books, games

o        Wool rests, knitting needles, old puzzles ( 50-300 pieces ) that can be used at work

-          Working and living conditions:

o        Working times: 7.45 – 17.00

o        No shift times, Monday to Friday, weekends off

o        Single-bedrooms with own bathroom

o        Good food from the kitchen but the eating times are early ( 8.00, 11.40, 16.30 ) and the portions are sometimes not that big

§          Microwave, kettle and fridge in the room to keep some own food

o        TV and DVD-Player are available in the work area

-          Pleasant and positive aspects about the project:

o        The people, especially clients, are lovely, funny, outgoing and very individual

o        Nice contact persons that are very open and helpful

o        Everybody is concerned about our wellbeing

o        Self dependant work and possibility to show own initiative

o        Good opportunities to learn Afrikaans

o        Cultural variety of the people

-          Mental and psychological challenges:

o        You need a lot of patience and strong nerves with the clients but we haven´t really had any problems

-          Practical difficulties:

o        Transport

o        Food, as supper is already at 16.30 you get hungry again in the evening and need to get some more food yourself, but there is only the Pick ´n Pay that can get expansive after a while

-          How to overcome these difficulties:

o        Rent a car for a while but talk to AFS about it first because it´s actually not allowed

o        Take mini-busses but never after sunset

o        Buy some food for yourself, starve or visit Riekie J

-          How to approach staff at the project:

o        Open, talkative, ignore the staff´s moods, don´t take things personal, be curious, but not too much

o        Talk to Betty ( by Kleinbegin ), she is a very friendly and interesting person

 

-          Other useful information:

o        Up the hill in Welgemoed there´s a post-office, Woolworths ( good but expensive food ), petrol station, pharmacy, Steers and Debonairs Pizza ( fast food places ) and another Pick ´n Pay

o        Down the Road in Boston there´s the other Pick ´n Pay and a good video rental ( Vee´s Video )

o        Minibusses: to Cape Town: take a minibus from the Pick ´n Pay Welgemoed  or stop one just outside the front gate, go to the Bellville taxi-rank with it ( just ask the driver if the taxi is going to Bellville as you get in ), and then change into a minibus going to Cape Town ( if you can´t find it, people will always help you ), depending on traffic it can take you between 45min and 2hrs, it costs around 15-20rand (ask other people on the bus for the price, somebody does usually collect the money, so try to have change on you)

o        Clubs:

§          Gringo´s Cantina: is a very cheap pub around the corner (Karaoke on Saturdays! ), you will find it next to the Pick ´n Pay

§          Edward Street Bellville: nice clubs and bars, but you need to wear nice shoes to get into some places

§          All over Cape Town you find nice places to go out, for example on Long Street, Obs, etc.

o        Other nice places:

§          Grand West Casino: there´s an ice rink where you can go ice-skating

§          Shopping Malls nearby:

·         Tygervalley: big shopping mall, cinema, lots of restaurants

·         Willowbridge: shopping centre opposite Tygervalley, nice atmosphere, nice restaurants, big fruit market, Barnyard Theatre

·         Parow Centre: cheap cinema ( 15Rand ), lots of shops

§          Do a trip to the West Coast, for example Paternoster is a beautiful place

§ Northumberland Road: factory outlets (cheap clothes, shoes and cheese J

There are really so much about what I could write but somehow I got the feeling all these situations and events can not be classified correctly.
And frankly I'm quite happy about it at the moment that my life is so happy that I met working and I can enjoy the feeling of being in the right place, because there were these moments even in recent years that often.

It feels good not about everything and nothing to break his head. It feels good morning to walk through the house and seeing all the smiling faces.
I enjoy the time and let myself, which meant that I relaxed and happy am, which meant that I do my job well.

Lili and I have mitlerweile very good relations with the clients. From time to take some home, and somehow missing every single moment he leaves the group.
It is generally amazing how well the group functions as such. There are about 45 people who all are on the intellectual level of young children and have their own habits and tolerate each other. Now and then they argue, that is clear. In relation to the size of the group that is very rare. I enjoy the individuality of these people. Many people strive for individuality. But what it really means to be individual, few know. People here do not care to such thoughts. They are simple.

Since we have tomorrow free (Election day, but we can not select us Anique has released yet) be Lilli and I go to Riekie and Arjen, bake cookies for the clients, so I have my laptop on loan now Lillis and write my report in calm.

Currently we are a bit sad because many of the employees that we may have gone or are planning to go. This is of course unfortunate if one is just here to make contacts. However, you will find many lovely people and this is a good thing.

Something to everyday life:

The nurses are real power women, they conduct around all day in the area and sometimes I'm glad I'm not a client ;-)....

Ina had already told us that it often complaints of volunteers or interns, because there is too rough deal with the clients and tw I understand it, because I now have a few views as one or the other one has been reached.

Sometimes I can understand the reason, basically, I reject this kind of off though.

Lilly says that it is probably a certain desperation behind it, and probably also true when one considers that come to about 50 clients in Group 7 of which 3 workers never all the time are present. Of course there are a total of more nurses but different layers uswusf ;-) ....

It requires quite a lot of patience and endurance to such a pile volume. Many are very, very sweet but each has its own peculiarities and needs to do to be fulfilled and when such a small petite woman care to twice as large and heavy man who will fight to enforce its will must is certainly no picnic. Jehaaa am this morning at eight clock was I picked up from Riekie, Arjen, Marion and Katrin at Alta du Toit Centre and we went to Cape Town because Katrina and I wanted to participate in the International Friendship Run. Who made ir also successful, and I am so happy that I pulled through the :-)
have particularly great, I found that Frankie and Maxwell are run there, so they come from Cameroon and it was of course totally good fit to the motto of the barrel "Make new friends," because we have the two even met in Cape Town.

today I am once again on Riekie and Arjen and I have time to write something like it gives me the last time is given ...

before last weekend were Katrina, Marion Simon and I in town. We have stayed at a youth hostel in Muizenberg, and are then on the next day took the train (yes, by train) to Simonstown. but enough of sightseeing, I would like this entry of my main activity or the real reason to devote my stay in SA. my project.

I "work" now for almost 4 weeks in alta du toit center (in quotations, because it is for me not feel like working) and I am extremely happy with the running of things.
Lilli and I have settled in well. I will describe our daily schedule views.

the morning over there is always something to do. our responsibility is to look in who needs help to take care that there is no dispute there, individual attention, we have .... we can show from last week ina, with what materials we can work. there is not much financial room, so everything must be kept as low as possible.
this week we have for wall decoration crafted a large tree from a paper mosaic, the result is really great and the best thing is to involve us, the clients we could have real positive FEEDBACK get for what we are naturally delighted, for when one wants to be a voluntary use of course also to do :-) be

is it lunch at 12.30, followed by lilli and I have free time to 14 clock

then we can help again to 15.30 in the sitting room, has asked us ina particular sporting activities to offer as many sit around the many stiff. we play football for the bsp. and that will really welcomed joyfully.

after eating at 16.00 clock circuit we have, officially brings really only at 16.50 but somehow the schedule does nothing, because no one holds tuned ....

you have to remember so many names (they all wusstenmeinen from the first day) and it is not simply verbally with all communicate. It occurred to me is that you attract a lot of information from facial expressions and gestures. that alone is a very valuable experience for me.
I'm learning every day more about single people in my group, they are all so individual, what makes the really exciting work, they express their feelings differently, eat differently, they all have their own "tick" some of it is so incredibly sweet and above all, they live their feelings openly ....

was jogging a few times lately with Katrina and we have found that with my athletic performance but not quite as dramatic looks, as feared, has done me really well and I will, I think in future regelmeassig run (I have also, otherwise I will here in bold)

yes I live here in an area that is relatively safe even if our nachtwaechterin behaubtet otherwise. than we were last Saturday at bahnhiof I have also experienced the first time how it feels to be black to live in Germany, because we were the only white for miles around, that was funny but also an interesting experience ...

es ist schon strange ich habe hier naehmlich noch nix dramatisches erlebt und sehe aber tagtaeglich diese ganzen zaeune und alarmanlagen....innerlich fuehe ich mich noch total sicher, weil ich das von deutschland gewohnt bin. und ich habe kein schlechtes erlebnis oder so, welches ich mit suedafrika verbinden kann. hier geheich jeden tag durch die gegend und wundere mich wieso niemand auf der strasse ist und im grunde irritiert mich nur das.

achja wegen meiner nase:
dieses we bin ich am sonntag zu hause geblieben,wil sich die narbe entzuendet hat und zwar nicht ohne, was mich echt richtig richtig angekotzt hat, zumal ich werde tabletten noch desinfektionsmittel oder sontiges da hatte. ich bin dann gestern morgen gleich zur krankenschwester und hab asked them whether it is possible that they gave me a prescription for unacit worried and I thought they should then ask again Tuesday morning, because then the doctor is there .... Well, the morning I then said to me something unacit may be similar to a bond and I have to pay anything for it (even though I wanted to totally love) but is basically a little late because of my nose again mitlerweile even quite well, but it's good to know that I if I get sick only once consumption demand, and helped me .... :-)

yesterday :-) Tomorrow we have to run Riekie waterfront and Katrina and I have spent the day ...
it was interesting and exciting but also very stressful to me personally and also a bit too many people, because on Saturday, the restaurants and shops of course packed ....
we have not, however, can take that to visit auqarium and I must say that I liked it very well ..... I'm a vegan ex yes these things before .... but more critically, the auqarium in Cape Town it was using to raise awareness about ecological problems such as attention and I find in quite a creative way .... I am positively surprised .....
especially the sharks have done to me, they have a very mystical atmosphere ...

I am still up tonight at Riekie, then, Lila and it will be tomorrow in my project, I am very curious what it is so for a human being and how we see ourselves .....

ABOUT GREAT report!!

So! Today and now I finally have time to write a whole lot of time and motivation.

I just sit at Riekie computer (the laptop I do not go, has already become an insider that does not like me) and I hope my thoughts together so far as to have that I do not forget the half. Riekie and Arjen are now gone out and since the two have said that I should as long as Katrina is still come every day, I have to "work" right on the way to made. I can run from the Alta du Toit Centre conveniently within 5 minutes here. However, I did not quite exactly the way and had just such a schleiherhafte Staartkart :-) and then I was luckily picked up one of the employees named Morris and accompanied me. He is also then stayed for coffee, which was quite nice.

Well, Katrina and I have therefore just storm free and have been eating lekker first and now we get to what must be completed.

Now a few lines to my project.

've said before I have my own room, consisting of a comfortable bed, a large closet (not me in Germany had), a bathroom (the bathtub is 40 years old) and the corridor is also a small sink. Luckily I have a very very dear colleague of Alta du Toit (Marietta) have a small refrigerator and a table concerned (not that I said a sound, she looked at my room and not 10 minutes later, they came with a young man in tow, it's the things she wore for) so I'm not dependent on the cafeteria food (more on that later).
My "working hours" are 8-16 Clock, in between one hours sone kind of lunch break.
I think however that I do not respect the Sturr would, because I'm assistant and the aid can also be used before 8 and after 16 clock clock ..... I think ma you know what I mean.
My boss also said that it is possible that I sometimes stand in the WE and I have the dates but then other times will be made available.
I can not really say much to the center itself, or I do not want, because I still do not understand everything and will for the first time two weeks all rest in work its magic on me. At the moment it is for me to get unbelievably exhausting all new impressions and information under one roof. Above all, linguistically, it is a challenge because I think in German, English and must speak while still hear Aftikaans (and learn), because most clients koenen only Afrikaans. Fortunately, I've also mentioned this before, are people so helpful, open and friendly that I do not have the feeling of being not up to the task.
